NEWSLETTER – March 6, 2020
Coronavirus – Coronaviruses are a common range of viruses known to cause upper respiratory tract illnesses. Their family name is derived from a series of integral proteins in their shell which makes them look like they have a crown. Interesting among coronaviruses is their ability to be transmitted from animals to people. Medical professionals currently know of several novel coronaviruses (nCoV) which have yet to infect humans. Prior to 2003 they were known only to cause minor cold like illnesses. Unfortunately, with the outbreaks of SARS in 2003 and MERS in 2012 it became clear that coronaviruses should be of more concern.
The current pathogen that originated in China is known as SARS -CoV-2 (Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) and is causing a disease now named “coronavirus disease 2019” (COVID-19). Just as the previous versions, this virus is believed to have originated from a bat. Symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
Things to note -- Since it’s a virus you don’t treat the cause, only the symptoms. Antibiotics are for bacteria, not viruses. Masks only keep you from infecting others; wear them if you are already sick. Alcohol kills bacteria, not as effective against viruses; viruses are “denatured” by strong chemicals and temperatures. Easy solution: clean surfaces with Bleach or Lysol, and wash your hands for a minimum of 30 seconds. Those most at risk are the elderly, the sick, or the very young. The most important things to do are:
So, what is the Association doing to help? -- Utility staff will now be disinfecting commonly touched surfaces like elevator buttons and hand rails multiple times a day. We have a supply of N95 masks available at the front desk for those who want some. We’ve ordered wall mounted hand sanitizer dispensers that will be placed in all entrances from the garage. These will be kept full going forward, but are not meant to replace hand washing.
Elevator Module & Door Controller – Beginning this Monday, the 9th, Kone will be removing the door controller for the padded elevator, along with the defective module. Those items will be shipped to their original installer, OTIS, for refurbishment. During that week and into the following there will only be one working elevator. Contractors and movers will be asked to limit their time as much as possible. At that time, we will also be taking advantage and reconfiguring the elevator cameras now that the running cables have been replaced as well.
New Security – As you may have noticed, the campus is now being patrolled by a new security company. Bald Eagle Security, who had been contracted by L&R for the past few months resigned at the beginning of February. Their replacement, GMI Security, started this month. Moving forward you can expect them to strictly enforce all L&R rules as they get to know the location. Please excuse their inquiries while assisting you and your guests.
